Google Maps leads car off incomplete bridge in Uttar Pradesh, 3 Men Died
In Uttar Pradesh, three people died after a car fell off an under-construction bridge after misguided by Google Maps.
In a tragic incident in Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh, a car guided by Google Maps veered off an under-construction bridge and fell into the Ramganga river, killing three people, according to a report from India Today.
The victims, identified as Vivek, Amit and a third person whose name has not been released, were travelling from Gurugram to Bareilly to attend a wedding. While relying on Google Maps to navigate, their car unknowingly approached an unfinished overpass. Unaware of the danger, they drove towards the overpass, which suddenly stopped and the car fell 15 metres into the river below.
Locals discover sunken vehicle The tragedy came to light the next morning when locals discovered the mangled remains of a car in the shallow riverbed. Authorities were immediately alerted and police reached the spot, recovered the body and began investigations.
“We received a call around 9.30am reporting that a damaged vehicle had been found in the Ramganga river,” a police spokesperson said. “Our team found a Wagon R, believed to be a taxi, that had fallen off an unfinished bridge. The victim’s body has been recovered and sent for autopsy.” Two have been identified as Vivek and Amit while efforts are on to ascertain the identity of the third victim,” the official added.
Families question negligence The desperate relatives of the deceased have criticised the local authorities and accused them of negligence. They questioned why the under-construction bridge was not fitted with proper fences and warning signs to prevent such accidents.
“Police officers must be held accountable for this negligence. Why was the bridge left uncompleted and why were no safety measures taken?” asked the relatives. They demanded a formal investigation and prompted the filing of a complaint against the building authorities involved.
The authorities are investigating the incident The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of the infrastructure and the reliability of the navigation system. Police investigations are ongoing, while the role of inadequate signage and lack of safety measures at the site are being investigated.
